So my title seems dumb but. for the past 2 months (1st month no doc because it wasn't to the point that i was limping so i did not see one)  my doctor whom i've visited 3 times already *note this the docs assistance is who took care of me. 1st time was one assistance and 2nd and 3rd time was another assistance. The 2nd and 3rd knew what she was talking about. They told me I had gout because of my high uric acid level which was around 9 something? But here is the my real question, the pain is in my hip area when i feel the pain its like the joint where my bottom is, on the left side. Not my foot, big toe, arm or anything on the usual basis. I kept telling them that it was my thigh, bottom area but for some reason i guess that slip their mind and on the last visit 3 weeks ago, I pointed out where it hurt exactly(hip area, joint on my bottom) the assistance said “hmm interesting” At the moment I am taking Indomethacin. It helps but not really. Some symptoms I have. at the momemt it still hurts but only if I get up from sitting down and when i try to lay down completely on my back and pretty much any position i try to get in it hurts until i find the right position then it stops. So Do I really have gout?

I have been looking everywhere for what i really have and this site seems to be the best so far. I will be going back on the 5th of January.

Though your uric acid level puts you at high risk of gout, it is not proof.

Sometimes gout diagnosis is obvious, but often it can be misdiagnosed because there are a bunch of other conditions that give similar symptoms.

The true test, where there is suspicion of gout, is to analyze joint fluid. This really should be done by an experienced rheumatologist with local testing facilities. You do not want someone incompetent drawing joint fluid, and you need to get results tested fast, as uric acid crystals can be unstable.

You MAY have gout, you may NOT.

Don't start gout medication until you are sure because it is lifetime treatment. In your case, I think that would mean waiting until you have a clear cut, painful inflammation of one of your feet to go along with another high uric acid reading or two.

I doubt that any doctor will aspirate a hip joint to look for gout but I might be wrong.

(To me, it sounds most like a case of sciatica. Do you remember hurting your back in the last year?)

I do recall having back pain before like real bad ones. I googled sciatica and that looks really legitimate to where my pain is.

Sorry, Vince, but old posts submitted as guests remain separate. Due to all the problems with guest posts, I have had to stop that feature.

    Thanks for registering.

I experienced sciatica pains on a few occasions. I put this down to straining my back/pelvis from limping with gout in the knee and/or foot. Maximum effort to walk properly cleared it up, so I assume my assessment was correct. In advanced gout cases it is possible for the sciatic nerve to be compressed by uric acid deposits, but I'm pretty certain that by that stage gout would be very obvious.

    Vince,

THe pain on laughing sneezing etc. doubly points to sciatica probably caused by a ruptured disk (if young) or an arthritic process (if less young :D) in your lower back.

You need a spinal MRI or a CAT scan or at the very least an exam by an orthopedist or orthopedic surgeon.

Do you have any tingling or numbness in your calf?

No, no tingling or numbness in my calf. How do I request a spinal MRI? or a CAT scan?
